Course Requirements
To complete HGV Instructor Training, you must hold a Category C & C+E licence for at least three years.
Ongoing Requirements
On completing a DVSA recognised, unregulated qualification*, candidates will receive a Certificate of Achievement and a VTCT Skills for Logistics ID card, referencing the DVSA recognition scheme, which will be valid for five years. Candidate details, including licence entitlement will also be added to the Register of Logistics Instructors.
*Unregulated qualifications are not regulated by Ofqual, or included on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). However, unregulated qualifications are subject to external quality assurance by VTCT Skills.
To keep your accredited certification in date, you will need to recomplete training every 5 years.
Test Requirements
Our LGV Driving Instructor course is aimed at LGV Drivers who are looking to gain an accredited certification, so that they are able to train new and experienced drivers. You will gain the knowledge, skills & competency to improve driver performance and assess drivers to a recognised national standard. You must be able to fully prepare LGV students and provisional licence holders for their practical tests. Included in your course is the framework of skills and knowledge to allow LGV Driving Instructors to teach candidates, using a variety of training tools to ensure an enhanced opportunity for success.
You must achieve all parts, which include:
- Part 1 – LGV Driving Instructor theory
- Part 2 – LGV Driving Instructor practical driving ability
- Part 3 – LGV Driving Instructor instructional Techniques

Part 1- Theory Examination
You will complete 100 multiple-choice questions in 90-minutes. These questions will cover the four following subjects, with 25 questions in each topic:
- Instructional techniques & practices
- Highway code
- Transport legislation & compliance
- DVSA test requirements & eco-safe driving
To pass, you must attain an 85% overall pass, while achieving at least an 80% pass mark for each section.
Part 2- Practical Driving Ability
Next, you will complete a 90-minute driving ability test. You will cover different types of roads, as well as completing an off-road exercise.
You cannot get any more than 6 minor driving fault, and no serious or dangerous driving faults to pass.
Part 3- Instructional Techniques
The third test will consist of completing an approximate 90-minute test, in which candidates will be given a Pre-set test.
You will be marked on the competence of yourself as an instructor, as well as the quality of the training session conducted. A 1-6 graded system is used to measure each element of the session, with grade 1 being the lowest, and 6 the highest.
To pass, you must obtain a minimum grade of four across all key areas to pass.
Further Training
As you become an accredited HGV instructor, there is no further training which would exceed this level. However, you could complete Forklift Instructor Training if you meet the criteria to complete this course

Anyone who will be regularly training others to gain their Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) licence will benefit from completing our RLI instructor course. Anyone who is also wanting to become an instructor, but wants to ensure the training they implement is relevant, necessary and informative to help those gain their HGV licence would be best suited to complete this course.
What Can I Drive With an LGV Instructor certification?
As you will already need a valid HGV licence, you will already to permitted to drive a Category C+E vehicle. The RLI certification allows you to teach others to operate an HGV safely and responsibly.
