The Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) Skills for Logistics are working alongside the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to reinforce why accredited training for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) is essential to help keep standards at a set requirement.
Developed in 2024, the VTCT explain that they are“…a charity and market-leading specialist vocational and technical awarding organisation operating across several sectors, including logistics.” With this, the VTCT have created the Register of Logistics Instructors (RLI).
The VTCT understand that the demand for safe road users is greater than ever, and as the number of road users increase, there is a further demand for those behind the wheel to be aware of their driving expertise. Also, as category B car instructors must go through rigorous training and assessing so that they meet criteria, why isn’t this the same principle for larger, more dangerous vehicles?
The VTCT provide the framework approved by the DVSA as to how HGV instructors must conduct Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) training, with the RLI certification reinforcing this standard and applying their accreditation to many centres who either wish to move from one accreditation to another, or looking to become an accredited LGV training company.
The RLI provide the opportunity for any who already have a valid LGV instructor certification with either the National Register of Instructors (NRI) or the National Vocational Driving Instructor Register (NVDIR) to transfer over to the RLI certification free of charge.

This organisation provide four separate qualifications
LGV Driving Instructors (LGV DI)
This allows individuals to complete the proper training so that they can become an accredited instructor.
RLI Examiner
This accreditation allows individuals to conduct the RLI examination. With this, you can examine a candidate, but not train them as well.
Driver Trainer/Assessor (DTA)
A DTA can conduct training and assessments of new or experienced drivers.
Driver Assessor (DA)
A DA can only conduct driving assessments, not the training.
You can also become an Approved Examination Centre (AEC) at a cost.
The RLI accredit:
- LGV Training
- LGV Instructor Training
- LGV Examiner Training
- Training and Examination Centres
2 Start have begun the transition to the RLI. Our Regional Training Director, Roy Chambers becoming an RLI accredited LGV instructor. He has also become an approved RLI examiner, which will give Roy the ability to conduct examinations on the instructors training course, on behalf of the VTCT.
2 Start also offer RLI LGV training courses, which will allow LGV drivers to become RLI accredited instructors, giving them more confidence in training others for their lorry licence.
To be able to join the RLI as an instructor, you must first meet criteria:
- Have a valid driving licence for at least three years for the vehicle in which they intend to conduct examination for (for example, Category C or Category C+E)
- LGV Driving Instructor certification with either VTCT Skills for Logistics or another DVSA recognised register.
- Provide the appropriate evidence which shows the applicant’s subject knowledge, experience and qualification.
