When you upskill and want to become a Transport Manager, you will undergo in-depth training to ensure you are safe and competent to manage your fleet appropriately. After completing the training, you must sit and pass the multiple-choice and case study exams.
You are given 2 hours to complete the multiple-choice exam, in which out of 40 questions, a 70% pass mark must be achieved.
2 ¼ hours is allocated for the case study exam. There will be 3 case studies, and 20 marks are available for each. You must achieve a 50% mark to succeed. You must pass both examinations to be awarded your Transport Manager certification, allowing you to become a nominated fleet manager for a business.
The Transport Manager exams cover all the modules you learn during your course and will test your knowledge so that you can be ready to manage your fleet.
Who can become a Transport Manager?
Anyone who obtains the Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) can manage drivers and vehicles within a business.
You can complete the training for Road Haulage, which encompasses vehicles that transport goods, materials and cargo professionally. Alternatively, the Passenger certification is for those who need to manage drivers who transport individuals (either in a minibus or coach) for a living.

Are the Transport Manager exams hard?
The course is equivalent to an A-level, also known as a level 3 qualification. The full course is completed in 10 days (this can differ if you are completing our home study training) so while it seems intense that you complete training in two weeks, and then being tested thereafter, you will cover everything in depth during your training, with the use of ongoing assessments during training to monitor your progress.
While returning to education can be daunting for many, you have a lot more knowledge and life experience as an adult. So, along with your experience, real-world understanding and knowledge of the industry, you will already have an advantage.
How do you pass the Transport Manager exams
Study the key topics
The topics covered are:
- Operator Licencing
- Drivers’ Hours & Tachographs
- Vehicle Maintenance & Safety Regulations
- Financial Management in Transport
- Road Transport Operations
- Employment Law & Driver Responsibilities
You need to make sure that you understand each topic so that you are confident when completing your exams. Having verified familiarisation with the exam structure and contents will help you prioritise how you will complete the testing.
Utilise practice papers
Understanding the test structure can help you gain insight into what the exam is like. This can build your confidence by breaking down the papers into manageable chunks, which make the structure feel less intense, helping you feel test-ready.
2 Start provides approved mock exam papers, and our expert instructors will also guide you through the style of questions that will potentially be in your examination. Reviewing your mistakes can help you understand where you went wrong, helping you rectify any uncertainties you have.
Plan your exam day
No one likes being late for their test. This may cause you to miss the exam, or feel ill-prepared. While our instructor will advise you as to when you need to arrive, and what the timetable will be for the day, it is up to you to be at the examination location on time. Make sure you arrive early with all the paperwork and revision notes you need, as you may have additional time to revise beforehand.
You need to double-check that you have understood the question, and confirm the answer you have provided before submitting the exam.
Plan your time wisely so that you do not feel rushed near the end of your exam, because this could cause you to make errors that you wouldn’t have if you weren’t pressured.
What if you don’t pass both exams?
Not to worry. If you don’t pass both exams the first time, you can rebook to complete them at your earliest convenience. If you passed one of the two exams, this is still honoured when you retest. You can also book revision days, where you can review what you are not confident with, and utilise the instructor by asking them questions about certain areas.
With preparation, asking the right questions off your instructor, and building your confidence in your knowledge base, you can be confident next time you retake your exam.
