Vehicle Requirements
A practical Category B+E test is no longer required in the UK.
Since the announcement as of late September 2021, drivers that hold a Category B (Car) drivers’ licence will no longer be required to complete a Category B+E (Car & Trailer) test to tow a trailer on the UK public highways. From this date, you will now be able to tow a trailer with your car or van if your vehicle and trailers Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) does not exceed the 3,500kg (3.5 Tonne) MAM limit.
This does differ for anyone who obtained their licence prior to 1st January 1997. If this is you, your entitlement is up to 8,250kg (8.25 Tonne) MAM.
Remember, the weights mentioned are the combined weights, so get to know your vehicle and trailer weights to avoid issues. Also be considerate of your load, i.e. camping gear, bikes, passengers etc. and the total additional weight also needs to be factored in.

Ongoing Requirements
- Refresher training periodically is advised, but not mandatory.
- Keep up to date with changes to the Highway Code.
- No further ongoing training would be required.
Further Training
While we do not provide any direct further training, our advice would be to educate yourself further regarding the highway code subject vehicle towing and loading.
Another area we would highly advise you consider more personal education around is towing weights specific to your vehicle. The exact towing weight or capacity for your vehicle will be stamped on the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) Plate that can typically be found underneath the car bonnet or door pillar. Alternatively, you can refer to your vehicle owner’s handbook supplied by the manufacturers.
Lastly, we would highly recommend understanding the weather (more specifically wind) limitations for both your vehicle and more importantly, your trailer.

Earning Potential
As a driver of a Car & Trailer or even a Van & Trailer you could look to be earning an estimated £16.5 – £27k per annum. – Source: National Careers Service
Who Is This Course For?
Our 10.5-hour course is suited to anyone who has zero experience towing a trailer. If you have some prior experience, but have not towed a trailer in a while and wish to rebuild your confidence and knowledge again, then our 7-hour course is perfectly suited to you. Lastly if you have recent experience, but just need some pointers and tips on specific areas like reversing around a corner, or our “S” shaped test scenario then get on the phone to our team as our 3.5-hour course will boost your knowledge, confidence and hands on experience and help refine your ability to couple, uncouple and tow a trailer competently and safely on the UK roads.
What Can I Drive With A Category B+E Licence?
While you no longer need to take a practical test, any Category B licence holder has been given automatic entitlement to drive a suitable vehicle while towing a trailer that meets the MAM requirements, which differs based on when you passed your Category B (Car) test.
With the Category B+E entitlement on your licence you can confidently drive a suitable Car or Van that has the appropriate hitching point and electrical connector while towing a trailer.
The maximum size trailer you can legally tow with a vehicle weighing less than 3,500kg (3.5-tonne) MAM is 7 meters long and with a maximum width of 2.55 meters wide.
While no maximum height is defined on the government’s website, any trailer that exceeds 3 meters in height must have height markers fitted. You should also be very considerate of bridges and telephone cables etc. that cross UK roads at many points across the country.
What Will You Receive Upon Successful Completion Of This Course?
Once you successfully complete this, you will receive a certificate of completion. This to verifies that you have demonstrated the required competencies to safely tow a trailer with a Category B vehicle to a standard recognised by 2 Start Ltd.
Frequently Asked Questions
What can I tow with a B+E licence?
A Category B+E licence means you can drive a vehicle up to a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of 3,500Kg, and tow a trailer of up to the weight limit defined by your vehicle manufacturer (check the manufacturer’s vehicle manual).
Why was the car and trailer test scrapped?
From 16th December 2021, the laws changed regarding the Category B+E entitlement. This meant that any Category B (car) and above licence holder automatically gained the B+E licence entitlement.
This change was to help combat the HGV driver shortage. This also helped to free up examiners for more prominent driving tests that are required. Although, it is still suggested that you should complete some form of training to build your confidence and experience in towing a trailer.
