Equipment Requirements
The overall objective of the course is to verify the candidates ability to meet the minimum recognised basic safety standard. This will include ensuring all relevant PPE is worn, and the correct type of abrasive wheel equipment for the course is provided.
Ongoing Requirements
Training may be needed later to refresh your knowledge on the safe use of abrasive wheels. HSG 136 provides advice relating to training and formal training such as every 3 to 5 years.
Test Requirements
Test requirements include a theory, practical test, and a pre-use check assessment.
The theory test will have 25 questions. 5 of these are open written questions and 20 are multiple choice. Half of the multiple-choice questions are orientated around safety, and the other half on operational matters.
You need a pass mark of 80 out of 100 to continue with the other two tests.
You will then complete a pre-use check for the abrasive wheels. This includes safe and proper check on abrasive wheels and the machines. Your instructor will determine whether you have completed a sufficient pre-use check which meets the requirements outlined by ITSSAR.
You must show in the pre-use check that you are inspecting the abrasive wheel disk for any cracks, damages and correct labelling, as well as checking the machine itself for any defects, insufficient fuel or oil levels etc.
Finally, you will complete a practical test. You will be tested on:
- Wheel Removal Procedures
- Selecting New Wheel
- Testing Wheel
- Mounting Procedures
- Dressing Wheels (is applicable)
- Adjusting Guards
- Running Up Machine
At the end of the practical test, your instructor will inform you if you passed or failed, while explaining how you did throughout the assessment.
