Course Modules
Depending on the level of training you look to complete, your course will be comprised of the following:
- 2.1 Responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 98 & LOLER 98.
- 2.2 Operators safety code
- 2.3 Battery maintenance, charging procedures and re-fuelling
- 2.4 Pre-use checks
- 2.5 Factors affecting stability
- 2.6 Motive controls
- 2.7 Hydraulic controls
- 2.8 Manoeuvring in open and confined areas
- 2.9 Stacking at different levels in open and confined areas
- 2.10 Destacking with laden and unladen pallets in open and confined areas
- 2.11 Lorry loading and unloading
- 2.12 Rated capacity
Throughout your training, you will be expected to show your instructor that you can safely use a fixed mast rough terrain vehicle. This will include carrying out a pre-operational check on the vehicle, as well as stacking, moving and de-stacking equipment, while also manoeuvring around various terrain.

Course Requirements
Before you complete your course, your must ensure that you have the appropriate PPE for the course. If you are completing a refresher course, proof of certification may also be needed.
Ongoing Requirements
To keep your ITSSAR accredited certification valid, you will need to complete refresher training in a 5-year period. Our refresher training is a 1-day course, and it will help you refresh your knowledge and skillsets to keep you compliant.
Test Requirements
There are three elements of testing that is conducted. The first is the theory-based assessment, which consists of 5 open-ended and 20 multiple choice questions. A minimum pass mark of 80% is required, with each question being worth 4 marks.
The second test is the pre-use operational check. This is so you understand the components of the truck, and you demonstrate to your instructor that you can check the vehicle before use, mitigating risk.
The final test is the practical test. You will be tested on critical skills that you will show during your test. This includes:
- Mounting, dismounting and parking the truck
- Starting and stopping safely
- Driving forwards and in reverse, including braking
- Steering accurately
- Lifting and travelling with a load
- Using hydraulic controls
- Judging the position of fork tips at heights, laden and unladen
- Stacking and de-stacking accurately at various heights
- Observing the working environment and judging speed, height, width and distance from within the confines of the machine.
Further Training
Further training includes training to operate a J2 or J3 Telescopic handler. These Rough Terrain vehicles have a longer reach.

Who is this course for?
Anyone who is looking to operate a J1 Fixed Mast Rough Terrain truck, but has no experience at all from it would benefit from our novice course.
If you have completed training before, but need to refresh your certification before it expires, then you would need to complete the refresher course.
Alternatively, if you have a certification, but want to convert it to an ITSSAR accredited one, then you can complete the experienced operator course.
Finally, if you have a certification in the J2 or J3 Rough Terrain truck, but want to convert to the J1 truck, then book our conversion course.
What can I drive with a J1 Certification?
With the J1 certification, you are permitted to operate a Rough Terrain vehicle that falls into the J1 bracket. This is a Rough Terrain vehicle which has a fixed mast. To operate a J2 up to 9M or J3 over 9M telehandler, you must complete the relevant training.
What will you receive upon successful completion of this course?
Upon successfully passing this course, you will receive a certificate issued by 2 Start and added to the ITSSAR TOPS register. You can also (for a small additional cost) receive an ID card for the Trained Operator Passport Scheme (TOPS) – this is available from ITSSAR directly.
