- 2.1 Responsibilities under the health & safety at work act, 1974, PUWER & LOLER
- 2.2 Operators safety code
- 2.3 Battery maintenance charging and refuelling procedures

- 2.5 Factors affecting stability
- 2.6 Motive controls
- 2.7 Hydraulic controls
- 2.8 Manoeuvring in open and confined areas and over varying terrain
- 2.9 Stacking at different levels in open and confined areas
- 2.10 Destacking with laden and unladen pallets
- 2.11 Load weight assessment and load moment indicator
- 2.12 Safe use of attachments (if applicable)
- 2.13 Lorry loading and unloading
- 2.14 Post operative checks
The amount of time covered within each module will depend on the level of training you complete. For example, refresher training is typically completed in 1-day, so you may have an overview of the modules in question.
At the end of your course, you will be able to:
- 4.1 Drive and operate the lift truck safely and efficiently
- 4.2 Stack and de-stack at various levels in a safe manner in open and confined areas and over varying terrain
- 4.3 Carry out pre-use checks to ensure the equipment is in a safe condition
- 4.4 Carry out battery maintenance and refuelling procedures
- 4.5 Load and unload vehicles
- 4.6 Operate safely on and over various ground conditions
- 4.7 Attachments available in the workplace (if applicable)

Course Requirements
Before you complete your course, your must ensure that you have the appropriate PPE for the course. If you are completing a refresher course, proof of certification may also be needed.
Ongoing Requirements
To keep your ITSSAR certification in date for the J2 Telehandler, you must complete refresher training every five years.
Test Requirements
Three tests must be successfully completed.
The theory test consists of 5 open-ended and 20 multiple choice questions. A minimum pass mark of 80% is required, with each question being worth 4 marks.
There is also a pre-use operational test. This will ensure to your instructor that you are aware of all the components on the truck which must be checked before you use the telehandler.
Then, you will complete your practical assessment. Your instructor will watch you complete a variety of tasks. These include:
- Mounting, dismounting and parking a truck
- Starting and stopping a truck
- Driving forwards and in reverse, including braking
- Steering accurately in open and confined areas
- Lifting and travelling with a load
- Using hydraulic controls correctly and sympathetically
- Judging the position of fork tips at varying heights, laden and unladen
- Stacking and destacking accurately at various heights
- Observing the working environment and judging speed, height, width and distance from within the confines of the truck

Who is this course for?
Anyone who is looking to operate a J2 Telescopic Rough Terrain truck, but has never operated one must complete our novice course.
But, if you already have the ITSSAR J2 Rough Terrain certification, but is about to expire, then you would need to complete the refresher course.
If you have a J2 certification, but want to convert it to an ITSSAR accredited one, then you should complete the experienced operator course.
Finally, if you have a certification in the J1 or J3 Rough Terrain truck, but want to convert to the J2 truck, then book our conversion course. Proof of your current certification is needed before you can complete the refresher, experienced operator or conversion course.
What can I drive with a J2 Certification?
The J2 certification permits you to operate a Rough Terrain vehicle, which has a telescopic mast of up to 9M, and also falls within the J2 category.
What will you receive upon successful completion of this course?
Upon successfully passing this course, you will receive a certificate issued by 2 Start and added to the ITSSAR TOPS register. You can also (for a small additional cost) receive an ID card for the Trained Operator Passport Scheme (TOPS) – this is available from ITSSAR directly.
