Course Requirements

Before you complete your course, your must ensure that you have the appropriate PPE for the course. If you are completing a refresher course, proof of certification may also be needed.

Ongoing Requirements

To keep your ITSSAR certification valid, complete refresher training every five years. This will retain your accredited certification for the J3 telehandler.

Test Requirements

Depending on the course type chosen, you will complete three tests to show that you can use the J3 telehandler safely, with regards to your surroundings and other individuals.

First is the theory test, consisting of 5 open-ended and 20 multiple choice questions. A minimum pass mark of 80% is required, with each question being worth 4 marks.

You will then complete a pre-use operational check test, which reaffirms to your instructor that you are aware of all the components on the truck which must be checked before you use the telehandler.

Finally, you will complete your practical assessment. Your instructor will watch you complete a variety of tasks. These include:

  • Mounting, dismounting and parking a truck
  • Starting and stopping a truck
  • Driving forwards and in reverse, including braking
  • Steering accurately in open and confined areas
  • Lifting and travelling with a load
  • Using hydraulic controls correctly and sympathetically
  • Judging the position of fork tips at varying heights, laden and unladen
  • Stacking and destacking accurately at various heights
  • Observing the working environment and judging speed, height, width and distance from within the confines of the truck

The test is based on the safe application of the operations being conducted. This allows you to have the time to complete safe testing and operating, while also considering your knowledge on the machine from the theory.

Further Training

You can upskill and expand your certification by training for the J1 Fixed Mast, or J2 up to 9M Telehandler Rough Terrain Trucks.

Earning Potential

Reputable Salary Checkers estimate the following for a Telehandler Operator across the South Coast:

Who is this course for?

Anyone who is looking to operate a J3 Telescopic Rough Terrain truck, but has never operated one must complete our novice course.

But, if you already have the ITSSAR J3 Rough Terrain certification, but is about to expire, then you would need to complete the refresher course.

If you have a J3 certification, but want to convert it to an ITSSAR accredited one, then you should complete the experienced operator course.

Proof of your current certification is needed before you can complete the refresher, experienced operator or conversion course.

What can I drive with a J3 Certification?

The J3 certification will allow you to operate a telescopic handler with a mast over 9M.

What will you receive upon successful completion of this course?

Upon successfully passing this course, you will receive a certificate issued by 2 Start and added to the ITSSAR TOPS register. You can also (for a small additional cost) receive an ID card for the Trained Operator Passport Scheme (TOPS) – this is available from ITSSAR directly.
