As a qualified Class 2 LGV 2 driver, you will be able to get behind the wheel of a rigid truck with a MAM weight of over 7,500kg or 7.5-tonne in weight.
Our Category C training courses are a great next step from your Category B or Category C1 licence and would allow you to drive a larger, heavier rigid lorry with a MAM above 7.5-tonne.
Upon successfully passing your Class 2 driving test you will also be able to drive the classes of vehicles below this category, for example, you will also be able to drive a Category C1 (Class 3) 3,500kg to 7,500kg vehicle without the need to take a separate driving test for the Category C1 to be added to your driving licence.
Once you have obtained your Class 2 LGV driver licence you will most likely go on to drive a rigid lorry for hire & reward and transport freight weighing above 7.5-tonne most days.

What is HGV Category C?
A Category C vehicle refers to the licence category required to drive rigid-bodied vehicles weighing more than 7.5-tonnes with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM.
A Class 2 licence will allow you to drive vehicles over 7,500 KG, with a trailer that has a MAM of up to 750kgs.
A rigid body vehicle includes those where the cab is permanently attached to the trailer, such as a typical box lorry.

Application Process – Medical
Getting a LGV licence involves several stages and the first process of obtaining the licence is to apply for one. You will need to first apply for a provisional entitlement, you will also have to undergo a medical examination. The driver's medical test is mandatory when applying for an LGV licence.

You will need to take the D4 form with you to your medical appointment and the examining doctor will fill it out. This will need to be sent back to the DVSA along with an application form, which we can provide.
Theory Test
When you have completed your medical examination and have your provisional licence, you will then need to undertake the hazard perception and multiple-choice theory tests. To successfully pass, you will need to answer at least 67/100 answers on the hazard perception test. In order to pass the theory test you will have to correctly answer 85/100 questions.
You need the right tools to pass your theory test and at 2 Start we have you covered, this is why we provide access to an online practice theory test software. It is quick and simple to use and will help you revise for your theory test. We always say if you do not prepare, prepare to fail.
If you passed your driving test before the 1st of January 1997, the good news is that you do not need to sit the CPC case studies test. For those who passed after this date, you will need to then sit the CPC test and this will be done at your local DVSA Theory Test Centre.
Training and Practical
After you have passed your theory test you will be able to move on to Practical Driver Training. We advise and discuss with our customers the best course for them and arrange the appropriate measures for them to start learning. We will then enrol you onto a course and these take place during the working week.
Our practical training sessions are completed over a period of four to five days.
This will give you enough time to go around the different test routes and will give you the time to try the various exercises you will need to learn in order to pass your test. It will also give your instructors a good indication of your strengths and weakness and they will be able to assess if you are ready to take your test.
Once you have passed your practical 3b DVSA test, if you are planning on driving a Category C vehicle commercially you will then need to take a Module 4 CPC course.
This is a practical, ‘show me’, ‘tell me’ test conducted at our driving test centres by our own examiners. On the day of your test, you will receive 2.5 hours of training which will cover all elements of the practical test. If you are successful you will receive a Module 4 Pass certificate.

LGV level 2 is also referred to as LGV2 or Class 2 historically, but officially known as Category C as this is what will be shown on the drivers licence once they have passed their test, but students should first practice, build their confidence & knowledge with a reputable LGV training company such as 2 Start Ltd in preparation for their final test with a DVSA examiner.
An LGV 2 driver is someone that drives a rigid Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) that can carry weights of more than 3.5-tonne, but the Class 2 Category C licence held by an LGV 2 driver enables them to carry weights typically over 7.5-tonne or more.
Although no maximum weight limit is set, when you pass your Class 2 (LGV2) Category C licence, most rigid lorries will only transport up to 18-tonnes.
